- Electrical fundamentals
Goal:
Understand what the components are and where they are used.
Apprentice 2 — System Operation
Learn how fire alarm systems function and communicate.
Topics include:
- Conventional systems
- Addressable systems
- SLC circuits
- NAC circuits
- Supervision
- Relays
- Power supplies
- Batteries
Goal:
Understand how fire alarm systems operate.
Apprentice 3 — Diagnostics
Learn why systems fail and how to identify the cause.
Topics include:
- Ground faults
- Opens
- Shorts
- Communication failures
- Device failures

- Real-world case studies
Goal:
Develop the ability to solve difficult problems efficiently and confidently.
How BDTU Relates to NICET
BDT University is not a NICET test preparation program.
Our focus is developing competent fire alarm technicians through structured training and field-based learning. Many of the concepts taught throughout BDTU align with knowledge areas commonly associated with NICET Fire Alarm Systems certification levels.
BDTU is designed to build understanding, practical skills, and troubleshooting ability—not simply prepare students for an examination.
Technicians who complete BDTU learning paths should be better prepared for both field work and future professional certifications, including NICET.
The BDTU Way
BDTU training is built on three pillars:
- Facts
- Code
- Craftsmanship
Training is based on NEC, NFPA, manufacturer documentation, and work performed in a neat and workmanlike manner.
Understanding how a system behaves is just as important as knowing what buttons to press or what parts to replace.
