BDT University was created to help fire alarm technicians understand not only what to do, but why.

Many training programs focus on procedures.

Many technicians learn by memorizing steps.

BDTU focuses on understanding.

A technician who understands why a system behaves the way it does will always be more valuable than a technician who only knows which buttons to push or what parts to replace.

The BDTU Way

Everything taught at BDT University is built on three pillars:

Facts

Technicians must understand how systems actually work.

Not assumptions.

Not guesses.

Not “that’s how we’ve always done it.”

Facts come from electrical principles, system operation, manufacturer documentation, field measurements, and real-world experience.

Code

Fire alarm systems exist to protect lives and property.

Technicians must understand not only what the code requires, but why those requirements exist.

BDTU training is built on adopted codes, standards, manufacturer requirements, and accepted industry practices.

Craftsmanship

Knowing the facts and knowing the code is not enough.

The work must be performed correctly.

Installation, inspection, and service should be completed in a neat and workmanlike manner with attention to quality, accuracy, and professionalism.

Built on NEC, NFPA, manufacturer documentation, and work performed in a neat and workmanlike manner.

What We Teach

The BDTU curriculum is built around three questions:

What are the components?

Learn the devices, panels, circuits, wiring methods, and tools used throughout the fire alarm industry.

How do systems operate?

Learn how systems communicate, supervise circuits, activate notification appliances, and interact with other building systems.

Why do systems fail?

Learn how to identify and diagnose ground faults, opens, shorts, communication failures, device problems, and other real-world issues technicians encounter every day.

How BDTU Relates to NICET

BDTU is not a NICET test preparation program.

Many of the topics taught throughout BDTU overlap with concepts technicians encounter while pursuing NICET certification.

Our focus is field competency.

If technicians develop a strong understanding of system operation, troubleshooting, inspections, and code requirements, professional certifications often become a natural next step.

Our Philosophy

Competency first. Certification second.

A certification can demonstrate knowledge.

Competency demonstrates understanding.

The panel reports the problem.

The meter explains the truth.

BDT University exists to help technicians develop the practical skills, troubleshooting ability, and system knowledge needed to succeed in the field.
